HobbyHorse Games announces new card-based RPG Firelight, headed to Kickstarter July 11

Tabletop card game features artwork from Michelle Czajkowski (‘Ava’s Demon’), Loika (‘The Weight after Water’) and more

Los Angeles, CA – March 28, 2017. Today, HobbyHorse Games, LLC announced Firelight, a new card-based tabletop role-playing game set in an original fantasy universe brought to life by renowned illustrators Michelle Czajkowski, Loika, and more.

Firelight is a simple role-playing game that makes it easy for anyone to experience the excitement, emotion and humor of improvisational group storytelling. A card game for 2-4 players, Firelight streamlines many traditional RPG elements to maximize flexibility and minimize setup time.

Unlike traditional tabletop RPGs, Firelight handles the heavy lifting so players can focus on telling fun and engaging stories. Quest objectives, character archetypes, personality traits and enemies are broadly defined by cards that are drawn at the start of the game. Randomized loot is divvied out to players from the Treasure deck, expanding and enhancing their powers as each Quest progresses. Using guidance from the cards, players are free to interpret and improvise at a level that they are comfortable with – Or create wholly unique Questlines for themselves.

This approach works in both casual gaming sessions and more serious settings alike, because it shifts the focus from numbers and stat sheets to creative storytelling and decisive action.

“After trying unsuccessfully to get into tabletop role-playing on a busy schedule, I realized there was a gap between casual games and the more serious role-playing fare that needed filling,” said Firelight creator Eric Woods. “This is the gap that Firelight attempts to address – Something that can be started immediately, is intuitively understood, and can be completed in one night. So if you find yourself too busy or too intimidated by traditional tabletop role-playing, or if you’re just curious, get in touch! We will be expanding public tests of Firelight soon, and your feedback can help shape the game down the line.”

Firelight will seek funding on Kickstarter beginning July 11, 2017.
